Answering the phone with a VoIP account
We prefer to work asynchronously and don’t advertise a support phone number. Still, some projects have users who really appreciate phone support, so they keep a phone number that routes to a VoIP (SIP) account at CheapConnect. To take those calls, register a softphone with that account’s SIP credentials.
Projects with phone support
Section titled “Projects with phone support”| Project | SIP account (Bitwarden item, collection) | Voicemail email |
|---|---|---|
| ITSLanguage | ITSLanguage KAT support telefoonnummer (ITSLanguage - Tech) | support@itslanguage.nl |
SIP credentials live in Bitwarden, never in this handbook; each account’s notes hold the full configuration. Missed calls go to voicemail, emailed as an MP3 to the address above.
Softphone
Section titled “Softphone”Use an open source SIP softphone:
Configure
Section titled “Configure”| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Username | SIP username (from Bitwarden) |
| Domain/server | voip.cheapconnect.net |
| Password | from Bitwarden |
| Transport | UDP, port 5060 |
| Codecs | G.711A (alaw), G.729A/B |
| DTMF | RFC2833 |
| STUN/TURN | off |
A forwarded call shows the original caller’s number, the same as a direct call, so registering the softphone (instead of forwarding to a mobile) is the only way to recognize these calls as coming in on the support line.
